Just an absolute must-see. This is brilliant content to sell the idea that we need to keep sending humans into space. We needed to be reminded that astronauts rule.

Voyager 1 has left the heliosphere. It took over 35 years, but the probe is still transmitting. Amazing!

These Weird Cartoon Faces Are All Drawn By an Algorithm (via Gizmodo)

These images would pass a Turing Test for doodles. This is very surprising.

Many of the venues that display white tigers have a long history of shading the truth about their mutants. The Cincinnati Zoo, an otherwise respectable institution, labels their white tigers as a “species at risk!” Nowhere on the zoo’s website or at its tiger enclosures does it point out that this species at risk is in fact an ecologically useless hybrid of Bengal and Siberian strains, inbred at the zoo’s own facility for big money. The Cincinnati Zoo repeatedly bred closely related animals over the past few decades to produce more of the white tigers, which they sold for around $60,000 each.

Save the tigers. Breed them responsibly. The amount of time it took to evolve these awesome animals, compared to the amount of time it will take to make them extinct, is tragic.

Watch This Insanely Speedy Sailboat Smash A World Record (via Gizmodo)

Just to affirm that there’s always room for improvement, here’s a video of a new sailboat going over 70 mph. I love it when apparently “dead” technologies are taken to a new level.

Animals Are Literally Being Dissolved Alive Because of Acid in the Ocean (via Gizmodo)

sea snails dissolving

Our CO2 emissions are getting absorbed by the ocean, creating carbonic acid which is dissolving the shells of snails. This is very bad.

The Dutch East India Company Cheat Sheet (via Mental Floss)

This is just an amazing story about one of the biggest megacorporations of all time. With a standing army of 10,000 (actually extremely villainous, committing atrocities like torture and genocide), it sounds like scifi, but it was actually the 17th century. Frank Herbert was right - it’s all about the spice. One of the best parts - they traded New York City (New Amsterdam) to the Brits for an island that was a great source of - not kidding - nutmeg.)

Pre-Demand: Providing information and services before you need them. Anticipating. Predicting. Planning for contingencies. Looking to the future in a practical way. Pushing this on-demand world to the next level.

I'm paying attention to nerdy stuff like consumer anthropology, cultural epidemiology, and cognitive ergonomics to make predictive services real. This is what I'm looking at right now. Maybe it won't be useful until later, but that's the point.
